ELECTION-2024-VOTER-GAP -- (ONLY ON AP) -- Two neighboring Texas cities illustrate a discrepancy that has been the subtext for the past two decades of U.S. politics -- between the diverse, potential electorate and the actual electorate, which is heavily white and wealthier. For a long time, the presumption has been that closing that gap between places like Lewisville and Flower Mound, which are north of Dallas would help Democrats and hurt Republicans. ELECTION-2024-LAST-POLLING-PLACE -- On a desolate slab of island tundra on Alaska's Aleutian Islands, a resident of a tiny village called Adak will again become the last American to cast an in-person ballot for president. The honor of having the last voter in the nation fell to Adak when they did away with absentee-only voting for the 2012 election and added in-person voting. ELECTION-2024-ARIZONA-ECONOMY -- American voters are hearing both parties promise to help the middle class if they win the election next month. But they've heard that before and, in the view of many, nothing got better. That disconnect is vivid in Arizona, a key battleground state where housing and other costs have gone through the roof in many areas. Voters who feel that pinch say neither Democrat Kamala Harris nor Republican Donald Trump is seriously addressing their plight. UPCOMING: 2,125 words, photos by 10 a.m.

ELECTION-2024-MAINE -- One of the largest, coldest and most rural congressional districts in the country could figure prominently in this year's presidential election. It also could help determine which party controls Congress. Maine is one of two states that apportions electoral votes by congressional district. The other is Nebraska. EDUCATION-PRESCHOOL-LITERACY -- A fellowship program is training young Black men to become literacy aides in preschool classrooms across the country. It aims to tackle several problems at once: a shortage of early educators, a dearth of Black male teachers and the acute challenges Black boys face in schools because of their race and gender. ELECTION-2024-COMPETING-BALLOT-MEASURES --Voters in Nebraska will see two abortion amendments on their ballot -- one guaranteeing a right to abortion until fetal viability; the other restricting abortion well before that. In Arizona, voters will face two propositions on primary elections -- one requiring separate partisan primaries; the other requiring open primaries in which candidates of all parties appear on the same ballot. ELECTION-2024-HARRIS-VOTER-ENGAGEMENT -- Left-leaning voter outreach groups have seen a surge of money and volunteers since Vice President Kamala Harris became the Democratic presidential nominee. But many of those groups are finding they still have a lot of work to do to introduce Harris and her policies, and in trying to turn out uncommitted voters of color. REL-ORTHODOX-MUNKS-PUPPY-LOVE -- The Orthodox monks in upstate New York take the Christian imperative to care for creation literally - they have decades-old, accredited dog breeding and training programs at their small monastery nestled in a forest. For the brothers who share their cells with German shepherds and play with puppies before and after daily prayers, the dogs are not just a way to survive financially, but to thrive spiritually. CASINO-ARTIFACTS-LAS-VEGAS -- Crystal chandeliers, showgirl feathers and fake palm trees are the type of artifacts that fill the graveyards of casinos transitioning from Las Vegas landmark into Sin City history. As the neon lights are dimmed and the last chips are cashed in, a different kind of spectacle unfolds behind the doors of shuttered Las Vegas casinos. MOLDOVA-ELECTIONS -- Moldova holds first round of Presidential elections and a nationwide referendum on whether the country should amend the Constitution of Moldova to include the Moldovan citizens' wish for European Union membership, in order to prevent future governments from derailing the country from its pro-European trajectory. ELECTION-2024-ABORTION-MEASURES-NATIVE-LANGUAGES -- Reproductive rights measures are on ballots in ten states after heated debates over terminology and impact -- and that's just in English. The Voting Rights Act requires translations into other languages in 388 places across the country. But vague or technical terms can be challenging. A translator for the Ute tribes of Colorado says "killing your baby" is one way of describing abortion in Ute. Another translates roughly as "your baby, before it grows, it's done." ELECTION-2024-MINIMUM-WAGE -- Voters in Arizona and Massachusetts are set to decide whether employers should be able to continue to pay tipped workers such as servers and bartenders a lower minimum wage than non-tipped workers. Arizona voters will decide whether to widen the hourly pay gap between the two sets of workers. Massachusetts voters will decide whether to eliminate the gap. UPCOMING: 1,080 words, photos by 1 a.m.

MIDEAST-WAR-ISRAEL-THE-COST -- Israel's been at war for almost a year - and the burden on the economy is growing. Military spending is up, and the government is shelling out money to support people who've had to leave their homes. The US is ramping up aid, but ratings agencies and the former head of the central bank are warning that the war may hit Israelis' pocketbooks in the form of higher taxes, lost business investment and lower growth if the conflict drags on. CAMPUS-PROTESTS-FACULTY -- Dissent is brewing this fall at American colleges, and not just among activist students. With student protests limited by new restrictions, faculty have taken up the cause.
